Auszeichnung Immaterielles Kulturerbe – Nachtsanggeläut in Gütersloh
The Evangelical Church Parish of Gütersloh and the bell team are proud to announce that in 2025 the Gütersloh night bell ringing was included in the nationwide register of intangible cultural heritage under the UNESCO Convention as part of the cultural heritage “Bell casting and bell music” .
The nightly ringing of the church bells has been documented in Gütersloh since 1790, making it by far the oldest tradition in the town.
The bells ring every Saturday from 7:00 p.m. from Reformation Day (October 31st) to Candlemas (February 2nd), as well as on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Eve.
This once widespread custom is now unique in Europe in its scale and is played only from the tower of the Martin Luther Church
.
